Cricket's three formats and popular tournaments

T20 cricket is the most popular format among cricket fans in Bangladesh. With only 20 overs per match, results come quickly and the situation can change with every ball. BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) is the country's biggest T20 tournament — local and international stars play together, which makes it especially attractive for bettors.

IPL is also widely followed in Bangladesh. Odds fluctuate more in IPL matches because of the difference in team strength. At the international level, the ICC T20 World Cup, Asia Cup and Bangladesh Tigers series draw the most attention from bettors at msw.

In the ODI format, statistics play a bigger role across 50 overs. Markets like top batsman or highest runs are more common here. Test cricket takes longer, but the three possible results including a draw offer far more variety in markets — innings-by-innings and session-by-session markets are available here that do not exist in T20.

msw T20 and ODI format matches

T20

The fastest format — result in 2 to 3 hours. The most markets are available in this format for BPL, IPL and World Cup.

ODI

A full 50-over match — because the whole game can be watched, markets for top batsman and total runs are more popular here.

Test

A long five-day contest — with three possible results (win, loss, draw) the odds structure is completely different.

Football and other sports betting

Besides cricket, msw also offers football betting. In football, win, loss and draw are the foundation of the basic market. A cricket match has many separate markets from the toss to the outcome of the last ball; in football, goals scored, first goalscorer and handicap markets are more common.

One key difference between cricket and football is match length and the density of events. In T20, odds shift after every over; in football, a single goal can turn the entire market around. In addition, player performance markets in cricket (such as top batsman) are standalone, whereas in football they are comparatively less common.

Sports like Kabaddi, table tennis and badminton are also available at msw. However, cricket and football attract the most interest among Bangladeshi players.

Popular markets in cricket betting

The markets below are used most often for cricket matches at msw. Each market is explained with a simple example of how it works.

Match Winner

Winning team of the match

The simplest market — choose which team will win the match. There is no draw in T20, so you pick between two outcomes. Example: Team A vs Team B — you bet on Team A, and if Team A wins you get your return.

Toss

Toss winner

Which team will win the toss before the match — this market closes before the match starts. Since both teams have roughly equal chances, odds are usually close.

Top Batsman

Highest run-scorer

Pick who will score the most runs within a team. Example: if you select someone as Team A's top scorer and they do score the most runs, you win the bet.

Over/Under

Total runs over/under

A set run line is chosen — for example 160 runs. You bet whether total runs will be more (over) or fewer (under) than that. If wickets fall or the pitch is difficult, under may be the better option.

Multi Bet

Multi Bet

Combine multiple picks together — if all are correct, the odds multiply. Example: if three picks have odds of 1.40, 1.50 and 1.60 the combined odds are 1.40 × 1.50 × 1.60 = 3.36, so a ৳100 bet returns ৳336 — but if even one pick is wrong, the full ৳100 is lost.

Innings Market

Runs in the first innings

Predict how many runs a team will score in the first innings. This market is more common in Test and ODI — pitch and weather conditions play an important role here.

How to read odds — decimal, fractional and American

Odds may look different but all formats give the same information — how much return a bet can bring. msw generally uses decimal odds, which are the easiest for Bangladeshi bettors to understand.

Look at the example below: you have placed ৳200 on Team A to win.

Format Odds Explanation
Decimal 2.25 Stake × odds = total return. ৳200 × 2.25 = ৳450 (৳250 profit + ৳200 stake returned)
Fractional 5/4 Profit ৳200 × 5÷4 = ৳250; total return ৳450
American +125 '+' means ৳125 profit on a ৳100 bet; on a ৳200 stake the profit is ৳250, total return ৳450

Odds are lower for the favourite. For example if Team B is the favourite: decimal 1.25 = fractional 1/4 = American -400. Here '–' means you need to bet ৳400 to make ৳100 profit. On a ৳200 stake the return is ৳250 (৳50 profit + ৳200 stake).

Simple rule: the lower the odds, the bigger the favourite — and the lower the profit. For new bettors, the decimal format is the easiest to understand.

A quick comparison

2.25
Decimal odds — Team A
  • Stake ৳200
  • Total return ৳450
  • Profit ৳250
  • If you lose, ৳200 is gone

This is an example only — not a guarantee of any real outcome.

You can still place bets after the match has started — this is called in-play betting. When a wicket falls or a big six is hit, odds change in an instant. In T20 this happens very fast, so decisions in in-play betting need to be made quickly.

For example, in a T20 if Team B bats first and loses 3 wickets in the first 5 overs, the odds for Team A winning will drop immediately — because the bookmaker reads the situation and updates the odds right away. If the batting team finds their rhythm in the middle overs, the odds rise again.

In ODI, big moves in in-play odds are seen when the powerplay ends, and in Test when a session changes. For those who enjoy betting while watching the match, in-play is the more engaging option.

Practical tips for cricket betting

  • 1
Understand the market first. Read the rules of the market before placing a bet — know what happens in case of a tie, Duckworth-Lewis or a rain abandonment.
  • 2
Keep to a budget. Set a fixed amount and try not to go beyond it. Read the responsible gaming guidelines for more on this.
  • 3
Do not put all your budget on one match. Placing smaller bets across multiple matches spreads the risk. Multi bets can return more — but one wrong pick and everything is lost.
  • 4
Do not rush in in-play. Because odds change quickly, many people make instant decisions. But a correct decision matters more than a fast one.
  • 5
Betting is entertainment, not a source of income. Cricket betting is for enjoyment — no strategy can guarantee a win. Treat betting as part of the fun.
  • 6
Know the rules and terms. Rules can differ between markets. Check msw's terms and conditions before placing a bet.
Cricket betting is for registered members aged 21+ only.

Frequently asked questions — cricket betting

T20 matches finish quickly and have no draw, so the market has two outcomes (which team wins). ODI offers more markets across 50 overs, such as runs in a specific over. Test has three possible results — win, loss or draw — so the odds structure is different and session-based markets are also available.

Generally, if a required number of overs is not completed the match is considered incomplete and stakes are returned in most cases. However, rules can vary by market — read the market rules before placing a bet.

In in-play betting the bookmaker watches the match in real time and updates odds accordingly. When a wicket falls, a six is hit or extras come, the probability of a team winning changes instantly — and that is reflected in the odds.

Yes, the rule of a multi bet is that all picks must be correct. One wrong pick and the entire stake is gone. Example: if three picks have odds of 1.40, 1.50 and 1.60, the combined odds are 3.36 — a ৳100 bet returns ৳336 if all three win; if one loses, the full ৳100 is lost.

Yes, in-play betting is available at msw for BPL, IPL and international cricket matches. Odds change in real time during the match and various markets are available.
